Weekly(ish) Roundup
June 7th, 2008, 7:58 am
Anyone wandering over to the forum for about half of this past week would have found it offline or inaccessible. This was because the datacentre containing the server its hosted on exploded.
Datacentres don't often explode so that was briefyl big news, at least around the world of webhosting. The explosion didn't damage any servers, but power was cut, kicking around nine thousand machines offline. That's a lot of websites that were suddenly inaccessible, since most servers host multiple sites. sayBxo itself was unaffected as we're located in a different dataccentre, although one owned by the same company.
Proboards, who host our forum, did a spectacular job of getting things back up and running by immediately ordering new servers in a different datacentre to replace the ones that were sitting unavailable in the damaged one. And now everything is back to normal, feel free to head over to our forum and say hi. You can find us at this address, but registrations are seperate to registering on this site so you'll need to create an account before you can post.
Staying with the kind of geeky webhosting theme this week, Ron and I have added a script to the server that may (hopefully) improve performance slightly. Recently we've been aware the server has struggled to keep up with the load placed on it, and this script is intended to lower that load by automatically clearing out temporary files and restarting one of the services that wasn't keeping up. it's basuically guess work as to whether or not it will have an effect, but it seemed worth trying.
Finally, a question for everyone - why don't you like Fishies? It's the least played game on the site by a long way, after being up for around a week, yet I was pretty pleased with how it turned out. I don't tend to read every comment posted on the games themselves, but if you have anything to say about it, send me a PM or leave a message on the forum (linked above) to be sure i'll read it.
